Fr. Jeff Dorr, S.J. has served as associate pastor at Gesu since June of 2021, in his first Jesuit mission following his ordination to the priesthood. In terms of his ministry, Fr. Jeff prides himself on listening well to individuals and paying attention to communities. He believes this approach is key to discerning where and how God is at work as well as understanding who people are and what they need.
At different times, that ministerial approach has led Fr. Jeff to guiding university students into relationships with people living on the streets, to facilitating groups for men and women in addiction recovery, and to serving as a spiritual director to individuals living in poverty. Fr. Jeff meets with and cares for parishioners in the sacrament of Reconciliation, through home visits and conversations. With Fr. Jeff’s background in Catholic education, he is excited to support the good work of Gesu School. Prior to entering the Jesuits, Fr. Jeff completed a Masters of Education through Creighton University’s MAGIS Catholic Teacher Corps while he taught social studies at Red Cloud Middle School on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. As a Jesuit, he taught U.S. history and, as assistant dean of students, oversaw clubs and non-athletic extracurriculars at Creighton Prep in Omaha, Nebraska.
Fr. Jeff is originally from Cedarburg, Wisconsin. While Wisconsin’s claim on Fr. Jeff’s heart will never be revoked, he has cherished the opportunity to live in an abundance of different locales, mostly around the Midwest, and each time to try to connect with the local community and the best of what it has to offer. He is thrilled that this time at Gesu will allow him to embrace Michigan, Detroit, and especially the Gesu community.
